Importance of Writing

WELCOME BACK TO BECOMING BETTER WRITERS GUYS!

Becoming a better writer was never in my thoughts. Growing up Composition and Writing were my worst enemies. I'm sure some of you can agree. However, writing is so much more than just a subject. It is more than a writing tool; it is a door opened for self -expression. Whether you're a teacher, a student or someone who just likes to jot your thoughts, writing helps us to clear our minds, strengthen our communication skills, support our emotional health, spark our creativity and even build our confidence.

With writing we are able to organize our thoughts and ideas. When we leave our thoughts in our heads they eventually get lost. However, when we write, our brain begins to sort our thoughts and organize them forcing use to develop skills such as reasoning, and problem -solving.

Through writing we become better thinkers. With writing we are able to explore language, tone and the way we structure our thoughts before sharing. As we continue to write, we are able to develop clarity, creativity and confidence in our own ideas whether it's in an email, letter, essay, or even on social media.

According to psychologist, James Pennebaker, expressive writing is a technique that encourages people to write freely. As teachers before teaching the writing process, we are encouraged to allow our students to write freely so that their thoughts can flow.

Dr. Pennebaker studies showed that we can ALL benefit from expressive writing as it:

- reduces stress levels

- improves our mood

- allow development of better coping skills

When we write we spark new possibilities, create new characters, invent problems and their solutions. We even express ideas that does NOT EXIST anywhere else but within our minds. Every sentence that we write whether short or long is an accomplishment.

Eventually, the more we write, the more we:

a. discover our own voice

b. express what matters to us

c. believe in our own ideas

Writing is more than just a pen and paper. It is a tool that we use for communicating, healing and becoming a better versions of ourselves. So Pick up a pen even a crayon, a notebook or start a blank document.

Your words have POWER, all you have to do is WRITE them.
