Poetry is the greatest expression of writers. A poet can not use their abilities to express, but also encourage expression! When writing poetry many individuals are putting their entire soul into words, as poetry can combine every genre of writing to elicit thought and stimulate the feelings of the readers. Poetry has always been one of the most appreciated types of writing as there is no "right way" to express yourself, the guidelines for poetry are that you write honestly.

The devices used in poetry are common practices, words, and expressions used to bring your writing to life, these include:

1. Alliteration

3. Metaphor

4. Imagery

5. Rhyme

6. Personification

TIPS

1. Express Feelings and Ideas Freely
Poetry is about emotions, thoughts, and imagination. Write from the heart.

2. Use Imagery
Create pictures with words so the reader can see what you describe.

3. Play with Sound
Use:

  • Rhyme

  • Alliteration (soft silver sound)

  • Repetition

  • Rhythm

4. Choose Words Carefully
Poetry uses fewer words, so each word must matter.

5. Use Figurative Language
Try:

  • Similes

  • Metaphors

  • Personification

  • Hyperbole

6. Keep Lines Short and Powerful
Break lines to create rhythm or emphasis.

Arcade

You arcade with your thousand money makers,

Collecting from children each day.

Your hands are open,

You give fun for funds,

And take payment for play.

You arcade are the place to be,

Every weekend you’re who I see.
