As a teacher of writing

The "how" of teaching writing is just as important as the "why". Knowing what strategies to utilize for student and how you can improve their writing with them is an essential practice. It is best for writing to not only appreciate how they teach students to write, but also to accommodate them and theirs styles for greater execution.

Strategies

1. Model Good Writing

Show students how to write by:

  • Writing in front of them

  • Thinking aloud while you write

  • Sharing examples of strong writing

2. Teach the Writing Process

Guide students through:

  • Prewriting (planning ideas)

  • Drafting (first version)

  • Revising (improving content)

  • Editing (fixing grammar)

  • Publishing (final version)

3. Use Graphic Organizers

Help students organize ideas with:

  • Story maps

  • Mind maps

  • Outlines

  • Flow charts

4. Build Vocabulary Daily

Teach new words through:

  • Word banks

  • Word walls

  • Daily vocabulary challenges

5. Encourage Prewriting Activities

Before writing, use:

6. Provide Clear Writing Structures
