Genres of Writing: Descriptive Writing

 HELLO THERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's been awhile...I know... but welcome back to our blog. 

In our last blog we spoke about free writing but this week I will introduce you to the different genres of writing. 

The piece included in this blog are my original pieces written during my classes....My writing pieces solely focuses on the Grade 4 level as they a short and sweet. However, feel free to use them and expound or reduce to cater to whatever grade level you desire........be sure to leave feedback. 

 

What is Descriptive Writing?

Descriptive Writing is a very fun and colourful writing genre. Why colourful????!! Well Descriptive writing allows us as writers to describe our writing pieces as detailed as we would like so that our readers are kept fully engaged. In this type of writing adjectives plays an integral role.. 


Stormy Day

 

            The dark, overcast sky has big, puffy grey clouds that look like they 

are ready to pop. The bright lightning that flashes across the 

sky allows me to see the broken cable lines swinging from 

side to side. As the rain beats loudly on my glassed stained 

window, I can hear the rumbling thunder in the big, scary sky. 

I can smell the freshness of the air all around me. This type 

of weather makes me feel cozy. It makes me want to cover 

under my thick, green soft and fluffy blanket with favourite, 

tasty and comforting snacks. Though it is a scary day, it also 

exciting!

    I really enjoyed reading your blog post! Your explanation of descriptive writing was clear, fun, and easy to understand. I especially liked how you used your own example to show how adjectives bring a scene to life. The way you described the sky, the thunder, and the cozy feeling inside made me feel like I was right there with you. Your writing is engaging and perfect students. Great job.   Overcoming Challenges in Teaching Writing Teaching writing in our classroom comes with certain difficulties. Such difficulties could be: Reluctant Writers : Some students may feel intimidated by writing tasks . Teachers can avoid early draft comments and assign groups to help to balance this. Limited Vocabulary : Many times straining to find the appropriate words are young students. Reading assignments and vocabulary-building games help to improve their linguistic skills. Time Restraints : One could exclude from the curriculum courses in writing. Including writing projects into other disciplines, such historical essays or scientific experiment reports, assures consistency of practice. By addressing these challenges with patience and creativity, educators can ensure that writing remains a vital part of primary education.
